When Your Garage Door Won’t Close, Start Low and Start Simple
You press the button, the door starts down, and then it changes its mind and rolls right back up. Or nothing happens at all and the opener light blinks at you like it is trying to say something. It is a frustrating way to start a morning, especially when you are already backing out of the driveway in your head.
Here is the good news. Most of the time, the problem is not the opener, the springs, or anything expensive. It is two small safety sensors sitting about six inches off the garage floor, and the fix often takes less time than reading about it. We will start there, then work through the other causes in the order we usually find them.
Two photo-eye sensors sit near the floor on each side of the opening, sending an invisible beam across the doorway. They exist to stop the door from closing on a child, a pet, or the back of your car. If anything interrupts that beam, the door refuses to shut. This is far and away the most common reason a garage door stops closing.
Walk out to the garage and look for:
Wipe both lenses with a soft cloth, then look at the small light on each sensor. On most brands, a steady light means the two eyes can see each other and a blinking light means they cannot.
If one light is blinking, that sensor has drifted out of line. Loosen the bracket screw by hand, tilt the sensor slowly until both lights glow steady, then snug the screw back down. The two eyes need to point straight at each other, and it takes very little movement to break that.
Indiana weather has a hand in this more often than people expect. A hard freeze, a snow shovel leaned against the wall, or a summer of the garage heating and cooling can nudge a bracket loose without you ever noticing.
When the door begins to close and then climbs back up, the opener believes it has hit something. Sensors are the usual culprit, but they are not the only one.
Look down the tracks on both sides. A small dent, a loose roller, or a buildup of grime can add just enough drag that the opener reads it as an obstruction and reverses for safety. Clear away any debris and check that nothing is visibly bent or pulling loose.
Openers use a limit setting to know how far the door should travel before it stops. If that setting has drifted, the door can reverse before it ever touches the floor.
Most openers have a small adjustment screw or button for the down-limit, usually on the back or side of the motor housing. Turn it in small increments, because a little goes a long way here. If you have adjusted it and the door still will not seat against the floor, the travel gears inside the opener may be worn, and that is a repair rather than an adjustment.

Test the wall button and the remote separately, since that one step tells you where the trouble is. If the wall button works and the remote does not, start with a fresh battery in the remote. A door that hangs crooked, feels heavy, or seems stuck in place is telling you something different. That points toward the tracks or the springs rather than the sensors, and a broken spring in particular is a more serious problem that makes the door unsafe to operate.
